In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk about the reasons behind the indefinite hiatus I’m planning after this episode. Could this be the final episode? It’s possible, actually, but listen to find out more!

Mar 3, 2017

It’s the last episode before the hiatus with an actual guest! Next week I’ll be explaining a bit about the reasons behind the hiatus for anyone who is interested.

Meanwhile, though, in this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Insane Ian. In the interview, we talked about how bad my early episodes were, the prolific output of Insane Ian since he last appeared, the 10th anniversary of the FuMP, rewatching stuff from our childhoods, MarsCon (which, I just realized, is going on the weekend this comes out – oops! I forgot to promote it! Uh, if you happen to be in the Minneapolis area, maybe you can still go?), reserving judgment on upcoming movies and shows, and comic books.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Believe It or Not”
  • “Die Hard Christmas”
  • “Kylo”
  • “Spider-Ham”

Feb 24, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Twill Distilled. In the interview, we talked about the origins of Twill’s stage name, Carrie Fisher’s death, breaking up, Wreck the System, collaborations, and Zelda.

Songs played in the show:

  • “F*** That Guy”
  • “Hive Mind”
  • “Next”
  • “Screamer”

Feb 17, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to B-Type. In the interview, we talked about the various Misters B, frustration with the state of the world, local slang, Gravity Falls, and Rogue One (minor spoilers, but not necessarily worth a full spoiler alert).

Songs played in the show:

  • “We Want Brains”
  • “Vigilante”
  • “Cannot Abide”
  • “Boo! I’m a Ghost”

Feb 10, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Shane Hall. In the interview, we talked about a whole bunch of things. I certainly learned a lot, which I’ll admit is something I’m sure I’m going to miss. Just give it a listen; Shane’s a really interesting guy!

Songs played in the show:

  • “Warp Theory 101”
  • “Avalanche”
  • “On Some Faraway Beach”
  • “Mother” – The TickleBomb Orchestra

Feb 3, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Yugen. In the interview, we talked about nerd music, hip-hop (“rap is crap!”), Star Wars, and Doctor Who.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Gangsta Unicorn (ft. Hi-Waters)”
  • “Star Wars Track”

Jan 27, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Trevakatha1ne. It’s actually a pretty short episode because he was on more as a fan than as an artist, although he’s working on some music. I decided not to include any music since nothing is complete at the moment, but you can check out a couple of things on his Soundcloud.

Jan 20, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Robin from Bedford Level Experiment. In the interview, we talked about writing solo albums, politics and religion, Star Wars (warning: Rogue One spoilers!), Paul Shaffer, finding an audience, Arthur C. Clarke, and emulators (especially C64).

Also, I have not actually had Wordburglar on the show despite the fact that I seemed to think that I had in the episode.... I have no idea why I thought I had; maybe it was a fever dream that I had one time? Yeah, I bet that’s it…

Songs played in the show:

  • “Robin’s or Tim’s”
  • “Surrender”
  • “Place Without a Computer”
  • “School Evacuation”

Jan 13, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Bluestreak. In the interview, we talked about a whole ton of things, especially his currently running GoFundMe campaign. It was simulcast, so to speak, live on Beyond the Horizon Radio, though I’ve done some editing to make it fit the format of the podcast.

And if you can spare anything to help out Bluestreak and BtHR, be sure to check out their GoFundMe. For just $25 you can get some cool exclusive music from a variety of nerdcore artists.

Jan 6, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Shael Riley. In the interview, we talked about video game music remixes, a future Kickstarter, being clever, not finishing stuff, String Theory (the game, not the theory of the universe), cover songs, and Payday 2.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Balloon Flight” (The Grammar Club)
  • “Last Good Day” (The Grammar Club)
  • “One Headlight” (Shael Riley)
  • “Publishing Rights” (Shael Riley and The Double Ice Backfire)

Dec 30, 2016

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk about my top ten geek music releases of the year as well as reflect on some non-geeky releases that I love.

I debated whether or not to do one of these lists this year. The past few years have seen the list expand and expand in order to accommodate more releases, which seems to me to kinda defeat the purpose. But then I started to see Best of 2016 lists from various places, and I got sucked back into the idea. I figured if Bob Boilen and Robin Hilton from NPR’s All Songs Considered can narrow their lists down to ten (well, Boilen did have some “honorable mentions,” too), then surely I can do the same, especially since I have a smaller list to begin with. And I also remembered something that Boilen said last year in regards to his top ten: “There is no ‘best’ in music, just ones we love. There is no right or wrong, just ones that fuel our soul.”

Here are the ten releases (along with the song I played in the episode) in alphabetical order; you’ll have to listen to find out the rankings:

Dec 23, 2016

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to several artists about Christmas music. This one was a little more deliberately planned than last year’s, which is why it’s an “official” episode. Also be sure to check out my new list of geeky Christmas music and videos over on the main Fandomania web site.

Also check the show notes on the Fandomania web site for a full list of songs mentioned in the episode.

Dec 16, 2016

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Primordial Emcee. In the interview, we talked about coming to hip-hop later in life, working solo vs. working with a group, Tron concept albums, The Matrix, and manga / anime / comic books / cartoons. There was a definite delay in our connection, plus some odd noises that popped up. I tried to clean it up as best as I could, but if things sound weird, that’s probably why.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Heroes For Hire (ft. Iron Wind & Chief 4syt)”
  • “Insidious Six (ft. Conspiracy, White Fang, Jesse Dangerously, Chief 4syt & Iron Wind)”
  • “The Path of Prime”
  • “The Perfect cRhyme (ft. Wordburglar)”

Dec 9, 2016

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to More or Les. In the interview, we talked about how much 2016 sucked, why certain rap / hip-hop is not for everybody, figuring out how to participate in political discussions, making money (or not) with your art, automation in a capitalist society, the recent U.S. election (yup, talking politics again), Net Neutrality, corporate controlled media, Doctor Who, and comics.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Hate Rap (ft. Wordburglar)”

In the interview, we talked about starting a record label, writing, French puns, memorable album releases, sex raps, physical media, the recent US election (yeah, it gets political for a bit), the origins of Hand’Solo’s name (it’s not merely what I thought!), and Spider-Man.

  • Backburner – “Burn It Down Again”
  • Birdapres – “Stabcabinmanitoba”

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to the PDX Broadsides. Songs played in the show:

  • “The Girl Who Couldn’t Even”
  • “Nathan Fillion Please Take Off Your Pants”
  • “Catatonic”
  • “Eureka!”

Nov 11, 2016

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Beefy (a little later than expected). • “Dear Valentine”
  • “Long Con (ft. Shael Riley and JPHONIC)”

Nov 4, 2016

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Mike from Boy Meets Robot. In the interview, we talked about chiptunes, skepticism, social justice, the Invisible Pink Unicorn (I was sort of incorrect about the IPU, BTW. It doesn’t originate with Sagan, he just used the concept in Demon Haunted World), retro games, and podcasts. Also, I seem to talk way more in this podcast than I usually do. No idea why that is…

Songs played in the show:

  • “Side Scrolling Hero”
  • “Social Justice Warrior”
  • “Invisible Pink Unicorn”
  • “Love in the Singularity”

Oct 28, 2016

Last year, I talked to a couple of musicians about their favorite Christmas music, and that got me thinking that I should do the same thing with Halloween music. And so as I interviewed several guests this year, I started off by asking them just two simple questions: What are some of your favorite Halloween songs? and How do people find you and your music online? Of course, sometimes the conversation went in other directions, but that’s the main part of the discussion.

See show notes on Fandomania.com for full list of songs mentioned by the artists.

Oct 21, 2016

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Cameron from The Mad Gear. In the interview, we talked about jazz music, My Chemical Romance and Gerard Way, barrels (don’t ask me what I was thinking with that word – I haven’t a clue!), screaming fans, 90s nostalgia, and the MCU.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Streets of Luxury”
  • “Black Omen”
  • “Stickerbrush Symphony”
  • “Guile’s Theme”

Oct 14, 2016

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Alyssa from Rhiannon’s Lark. In the interview, we talked about pagan influences, filk music definitions, the weirdness of XP, rebirth, gaming, and old school card games (man, I really miss playing euchre and hearts!).

Songs played in the show:

  • “Corduroy Ninja”
  • “What If Age Were XP?”
  • “Killer Snails”
  • “Addicted to X-Wing”

Oct 7, 2016

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Ultra Magnus and DJ SLAM!. In the interview, we talked about skeet shooting, colored vinyl, the Toronto Raptors, scratching, and black face in 2016. It was so completely ridiculous, I genuinely wasn’t quite sure if they were joking about switching roles, but, yeah, they pretty clearly weren’t. In my defense, I was listening on pretty crappy headphones (I have since invested in some better ones). And maybe there might have been some alcohol involved as well…

Songs played in the show:

  • “Thirst Trap”
  • “4 the People (ft. Snaggapuss)”
  • “Junglist Soldier (ft. Kondriah)”
  • “North Is in the House (ft. Dyna)”
