  • “Buccaneer”
  • “Gandalf”

  • “All About That Space”

Sep 18, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Greg and Steve from the band Lipstick. In the interview, we talked about glam rock, unrequited time-traveling love, anime sitcoms, post-scarcity economies, Finn’s lightsaber, and the new rules of the internet.

  • “Merle"
  • “The Conan Song”
  • “Fight Club”
Sep 11, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Chris Waffle of Going Viral. No, you’re not going crazy, I did state that this week’s episode would be with Lipstick. But as I say in the introduction, Going Viral has a concert on September 19, so I felt like it made more sense to put this out a week before rather than the day before. Lipstick’s episode will appear next week.

In the interview, we talked about hating on movies before they’re even released, Star Trek, Star Wars, geeky and non-geeky wives, and the Pacific northwest and Florida nerd music scenes (yeah, I’m sure I forgot tons of Florida artists – sorry!).

Songs played in the show (I should note that these are not final mixes):

  • “It’s Not Out Yet”
  • “Slave Leia”
  • “Rez Heal Rock”

Sep 4, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to a few musicians at Orlando Nerd Fest 2015. First up is Steve Smith aka Fighter #1 from Regdar and the Fighters, followed by Professor Shyguy and then Richie Branson. They’re relatively short interviews which is why I’ve put them together as one episode. I also decided to do very little editing to preserve the feel of an actual conversation a bit better, including some slightly awkward moments on my part. In between, I’ve included a musical sample before each artist to split them up.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Call of Cthulhu” by Regdar and the Fighters
  • “N.E.R.D.” by Richie Branson
  • “My Simple Pop Song” by Professor Shyguy
Aug 28, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to The Blast Processors. In the interview, we talked about Sega vs. Nintendo, mascot-based video games, cheesy 80s movies and music, and comic books.

Songs played in the show:

  • “The Cool Spot”
  • “The Last Stand of Dr. Ivo Robotnik”
  • “Genesis Does”
  • “We Ride”
Aug 21, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Cliff B and DJ Stuck Down a Mineshaft with a Broken Leg, aka 2d6. In the interview, we talked about RPGs, alternate track titles, their Kickstarter for the new album (I did actually upgrade to the Kano tier), secret nerd missions, and the pains of being a Silent Hill fan.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Hyuk Hyuk Hyuk Hyuk Hyuk Hyuk Hyuk”
  • “Tonawanda Powertrain (feat. Worm Quartet)”
  • “Yolo Toblerone”
Aug 14, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to The Doubleclicks. In the interview, we talked about cats, games, extinctions, and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

It’s definitely shorter than usual, but that’s mainly because I feel like I did a terrible job of asking follow up questions. I started to get nervous part way through the interview and just focused too much on what I was going to say next.

Oh, and Angela did send me an answer about the fictional cats: “Salem! From Sabrina! Of course!”

Songs played in the show:

  • Cats at Parties
  • Tabletop
  • Dimetrodon
  • President Snakes (Part 1)
Aug 7, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Mr. Negative. If it sounds a bit weird, it’s because I actually went to Richie’s apartment to conduct the interview. He’s a former student of mine from over ten years ago, and he actually lives not too far from me. In the interview, we talked about working as an indie musician, EDM culture, obsessive geekiness, Joe Walsh, and superhero movies.

Warning: spoilers for Avengers: Age of Ultron and Guardians of the Galaxy from about 34:50 (just after the fourth song excerpt) to about 38:26.

Songs played in the show:

  • Jasper
  • Repentance
  • James Dean
  • Voyage
Jul 31, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Lauren Furze, aka TheFifthSister. In the interview, we talked about Alpha Riff’s Digital Champions project, making music as an indie artist, Pat Benatar, comics, and the UK vs. US geek music scene.

Songs played in the show:

  • Hello
  • No, I’m Not Incredible
  • All Aboard the SS Fangirl
  • Mission Accomplished
Jul 24, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Peter Chiykowski of Rock / Paper / Cynic. In the interview, we talked about punny names, his awesome new Kickstarter, mixing geeky fandoms, Coheed and Cambria (I’m totally gonna have to look them up now!), and cyphers.

Songs played in the show:

  • Zeroes and Ones
  • Hello NSA (A Love Song of Mass Surveillance)
  • Geeks In Love
  • I Don’t Need You (I’ve Got Netflix)

Jul 17, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Adam Sakellarides. In the interview, we talked about Star Trek, introversion, geeky verbosity, NASA and space, Cheers, and the history and design of computers.

Songs played in the show:

  • No Pretender
  • The Introverts
  • Too Verbose
  • Warm Bread
  • Our Own Lines (placed later in the episode than we talked about it)

Jul 10, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Kraken Not Stirred. In the interview, we talked about the kitara, the 1955 robot invasion, tech support, Joss Whedon, and a really cool Tron compilation.

Oh, and I’ve since gone and rewatched Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure so, uh, yeah, I totally understand the song “Shut Up, Ted” much better now (and it’s pretty obvious now that I have the movie in my head again). Amazing what over twenty-five years of not seeing a movie will do to the old memory…

Songs played in the episode:

  • Shark With Wheels and Hands
  • Robot Invasion of Earth
  • The Tech Support Blues
  • Reaver Attack

Jul 3, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Zach and Bobby from The Runaway Five. In the interview, we talked about EarthBound, hippies and punks, cassette tapes, tigers, RPGs, and Marvel. There might possible have been some drinking as well (I’d already finished my own beer beforehand), so if I sound more jovial than usual, now you know why. Oh, and it turns out my wife doesn’t really have a favorite Grateful Dead song, so there’s that.

Songs played in the episode:

  • Sexy Lightningbolt
  • Mise En Place
  • Not Enough Tigers
  • It's Great to be Back in Zozo
Jun 19, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Bonecage. In the interview, we talked about juxtaposing beauty with awfulness, the 1980s (of course), video games, and avoiding chores. We had a discussion in the past about not being very good at interviews, but I think we both did pretty good.

And if you notice a quality drop off in the outro, that's because I recorded it on vacation rather than at home.

Jun 5, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Adam WarRock. In the interview, we talked about dancing nerds, Guardians of the Galaxy, patronage (including WarRock’s upcoming Donation Drive), and the problems with having too much pop culture to keep up with.

May 29, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I don’t have a guest. I guess that makes it a “hostful” episode (yes, I totally stole that term from Nerdist, obviously). Since May ends up with an “extra” Monday (I’ve been posting on the first and third Mondays, and May has a fifth), I figured it was about time to pull back the curtains, so to speak, on this whole geek music thing that I’ve been doing for the last five years or so. I’ll explore the origins of my column about geek music and the origins of this podcast plus a little bit of my own philosophy of geek music.

May 15, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Kyle Stevens from Kirby Krackle. In the interview, we talked about awkward fan moments, geeks vs. nerds, the death of geek culture (or maybe not…), the origins of Frank the Pocket, and TED talk hands. I’m not sure where the hissing in the background towards the end came from; I tried to clean it up as best as I could, but I couldn’t get rid of it entirely. I think it’s still quite listenable.

May 1, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Aramis. In the interview, we talked about video game rage, samurai, intelligent music, Marvel vs. DC, comic books TV shows, and messy rooms.

You’ll notice that I decided to cut out this part of the intro on the podcast. Basically, I realized that it’s kind of redundant since I already introduce the podcast before I start the interview. It’s an experiment, but I’m pretty confident that I’ll stick with it.

Apr 17, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Insane Ian. In the interview, we talked about an awful lot of things. See, Ian really likes to talk. Which is, of course, fine with me; that’s why I have people on the podcast, after all. And I’m pretty sure that no one is listening to this to hear my incredible deft interviewing skills (ha ha!). You’re here to listen to Ian talk about the album and his music, and that’s exactly what you’ll hear. Plus a whole ton of tangents. It was really fun, in other words, and I learned a lot.

Apr 3, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Alpha Riff. In the interview, we discussed the origins of my alias, Darth Aqueous; cyberpunk (especially Blade Runner), heavy metal music, the new album Riff is working on (which sounds like it’ll be AMAZING!) and the Digital Champions Consortium, ST:TNG (including my sort of embarrassing story about Wesley Crusher),  and SXSW and the new golden age of nerd music.

Mar 20, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Jared from the band the Gekkos. When he first contacted me, I knew the band name sounded familiar. Turns out they were at the final Nerdapalooza in 2013. I’m pretty sure that I caught part of their set, and I’ve since watched the whole thing on YouTube (unfortunately, the video quality is terrible, but the sound is fine). I like their new album, Tragical History Tour, and I plan to review it sometime soon.

In the interview, we talk about DashCon and other tragedies, Weird Al, The Rutles (which I somehow have never seen), MST3K, and loving whoever you want to love.

Mar 6, 2015

On this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Austin and Nathan from Smashy Claw. I only recently discovered this band via Insane Ian’s recommendation, and I quickly gave their album, Former Spine, an Honorable Mention of my favorite albums of 2014 (since it came out in 2013). They show a clear influence from one of my favorite bands, They Might Be Giants, both lyrically and musically. In this episode, we talk about Nanobots, the ending of The Killing Joke, Breaking Bad (again), and which Iron Man is the best. Unfortunately this episode is going up just after Austin’s solo show at the University of Colorado-Denver on Feb. 24th. I hope it went well for him.

Feb 20, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talked to one of my favorite geeky artists, Marc with a C. I first became a fan of Marc's when he released Motherfuckers Be Bullshittin' back in 2011, although I probably saw him at Nerdapalooza 2010 when I had almost no idea who anyone was. But it was really his next full length album, Popular Music, that made me into the rabid fan I am today. I've since gone back and bought everything I can get my hands on, including all of the vinyl albums. In fact, Marc is the one who showed me how great vinyl can be.

In this interview, we talk about his new album, Exactly Where I Am, the nerd music tribe, bad movies (especially Nightmare on Elm Street), and even why Marc is perpetually blue (and if you get that reference before listening, then give yourself 10 geek points).

Jan 30, 2015

For this inaugural episode, I interview Jace and Kyle from Nuclear Bubble Wrap. We discuss the new album as well as some exciting revelations about the future, and there’s some talk of Breaking Bad as well. I’m still getting the hang of this, so I hope it sounds OK.
