In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk yet again to Mikal kHill (technically his fifth appearance, but one was a “team-up” with cecilnick). His latest release is the beachy keen EP which consists of surf rock versions of five of his tracks. As odd as that might sound, it’s actually really great because kHill and the band took it seriously even while having fun with it.

Songs played in the show:

  • “The Moon”
  • “R. Dorothy Wayneright”
  • “Punch Up”

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to MC Breath. His latest release is Creepshots, which features more story telling songs than his previous releases, but keeps his odd sense of humor and use of dialogue samples from the 70s and 80s.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Creepshots”
  • “I Wish I Was Dead”
  • “Molly McButter”

Jul 27, 2018

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Gray Rinehart. His most recent release, Distorted Vision, is actually from a few years ago, but he has a few new songs that you can hear when he performs live.

We also talk about his writing, including his Hugo nominated story, “Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust, Earth to Alluvium,” which unfortunately got caught up in the whole Sad Puppies / Rabid Puppies controversy (although Gray himself mostly stayed out of it. His reaction post, I think, demonstrates a measured response to the whole thing).

Songs played in the show:

  • “The Enemy’s Gate Is Down”
  • “Faded Coat of Brown”
  • “Dead Dog Party”

Jul 20, 2018

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Paul Melancon. He’s currently running a Kickstarter with the help of Angela Webber of the Doubleclicks. It’s for a concept album about a cartoon band called The Get-Gos. The album, The Get-Gos Action Hour!, is a tour “from depression to destruction to a very strange sort of redemption. All this through the kaleidoscope of Hanna-Barbera, Amazonian shaman, and hamburgers.” He’s also been making music for over 20 years now, so we get into some of his history, including a hiatus he took that lead to the making of this album.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Hyperventilate”
  • “Dark Double Bed” (from the album Hopeful Monsters by The Arts and Sciences)
  • “Makes No Sense at All” (Hüsker Dü cover from the Theme Music project)

Jul 13, 2018

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Insane Ian. This is a banked episode, appropriately recorded on April Fool’s Day 2018 (which was also Easter), so we talk about non-timely stuff. I included a couple of tracks from his most recent release, Yet Another B-Side Collection, which was actually released the day we recorded! Also, his Reviewsicals album is currently available for pre-order.

Songs played in the show:

  • “The Bowling Green Fabrication Society”
  • “Tuesday’s Song (Is Not Yet Posted)”

Jul 6, 2018

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to the members of dot.darkness. Their latest release is Polymorph, an eclectic mix of electronic music that started out as dumb ideas (their words, not mine!) and ended up as some really great songs!

Songs played in the show:

  • “The Hunger”
  • “Heart of the Battle”
  • “Loom”

Jun 29, 2018

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Grace Kendall. Their latest release is three “verifiably favorable discs” about A Series of Unfortunate Events (one for each book, plus a bonus track about Beatrice). They’ve also written many Harry Potter-based (wrock) tunes which you should check out as well.

Songs played in the show:

  • “My Best Friend”
  • “Carmelita Spats”
  • “Villains”

Jun 22, 2018

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Shubzilla and Bill Beats. Their latest release is Boomers V.2, their follow up to 2015’s Boomers. And listen for some details about upcoming releases as well!

Songs played in the show:

  • “I Told You So”
  • “Doing Fine”
  • “Broken Glass”

Jun 15, 2018

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to DJ Switch. His latest endeavor is Switch Box Tech, a YouTube channel where he reviews tech. Oh, and, yeah, we both realized later that I have actually been on his show before, but since he’s archived the episodes it’s no longer available. We are, however, working on getting me back on at some point.

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to three of the members of The Mad Gear. Their latest release is a soundtrack for a video game based on them, Go Right and Fight. As the name implies, it’s a cool 8-bit game reminiscent of Double Dragon and Ninja Gaiden but with its own twists on the genre. And the soundtrack fits perfectly, too.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Simon’s Theme”
  • “Act 1: Gonna Be a Jailbreak” – from the Go Right and Fight soundtrack
  • “Guile’s Theme”

Jun 1, 2018

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Greg Troyan of Lipstick. This is a banked episode, recorded back in late March, so we talk about non-timely stuff. We also recorded this before I was on The Lipstick Panel podcast in which we discussed the Paul Stanley 1978 self-titled solo album. I did include a couple of tracks from Lipstick’s most recent release, Lipstick II, though, just in case you’ve never checked them out before!

Songs played in the show:

  • “Girl Dressed as Sailor Moon”
  • “Rock ‘n’ Roll Anime Girls”

May 25, 2018

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to the Misbehavin’ Maidens. Their latest release is Sloppy Seconds, a rather raucous, ribald, and racy album of decidedly NSFW pirate / geeky / feminist songs.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Rummer, the Rumrunner”
  • “Aspirin ‘Twixt Our Knees”
  • “Alphabet Song”

May 18, 2018

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Derwood Bowen. His latest release is Sacre Boooo, a musically far-ranging comedy music album with both originals and parodies.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Pussycat Control”
  • “The Stupid, It Burns”
  • “The Mandela Effect”

May 11, 2018

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Metricula. Her debut release is the Songs for Gamers EP. She’s a filk artist who also dons clown make-up at least part of the time. And she has plenty of other content over on her Twitch channel as well, some of which is a bit more on the adult side of things.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Mtn Dew”
  • “Meownir”
  • “Battle Hymn of the Murder Hobos”

Feb 16, 2018

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to The Faithful Sidekicks. Their latest release is Achievement Unlocked. It’s a fun album about all sorts of different fandoms and stuff that you should definitely check out!

Songs played in the show:

  • “Achievement Unlocked”
  • “I Am Not a Gun”
  • “One with the Force”

Feb 9, 2018

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Marc with a C. His latest release is Obscurity, which you should definitely order on vinyl. And be sure to listen to as much of his back catalog as you can in anticipation – you’ll be rewarded if you do! Oh, and while you’re at it – check out my review of it here.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Low Rent Truman Show”
  • “One of These Are Gonna Be Your Day”
  • “Terribly Popular”

Oct 2, 2015

  • “The Mining Ship the Red Dwarf”
  • “Doctor of Gallifrey”
  • “Jedi Drinking Song Prequel”
  • “Monahan's Mudder's Milk”

  • “All About That Space”

Sep 18, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Greg and Steve from the band Lipstick. In the interview, we talked about glam rock, unrequited time-traveling love, anime sitcoms, post-scarcity economies, Finn’s lightsaber, and the new rules of the internet.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Merle"
  • “The Conan Song”
  • “Fight Club”
Sep 11, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Chris Waffle of Going Viral. No, you’re not going crazy, I did state that this week’s episode would be with Lipstick. But as I say in the introduction, Going Viral has a concert on September 19, so I felt like it made more sense to put this out a week before rather than the day before. Lipstick’s episode will appear next week.

In the interview, we talked about hating on movies before they’re even released, Star Trek, Star Wars, geeky and non-geeky wives, and the Pacific northwest and Florida nerd music scenes (yeah, I’m sure I forgot tons of Florida artists – sorry!).

Songs played in the show (I should note that these are not final mixes):

  • “It’s Not Out Yet”
  • “Slave Leia”
  • “Rez Heal Rock”

Sep 4, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to a few musicians at Orlando Nerd Fest 2015. First up is Steve Smith aka Fighter #1 from Regdar and the Fighters, followed by Professor Shyguy and then Richie Branson. They’re relatively short interviews which is why I’ve put them together as one episode. I also decided to do very little editing to preserve the feel of an actual conversation a bit better, including some slightly awkward moments on my part. In between, I’ve included a musical sample before each artist to split them up.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Call of Cthulhu” by Regdar and the Fighters
  • “N.E.R.D.” by Richie Branson
  • “My Simple Pop Song” by Professor Shyguy
Aug 28, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to The Blast Processors. In the interview, we talked about Sega vs. Nintendo, mascot-based video games, cheesy 80s movies and music, and comic books.

Songs played in the show:

  • “The Cool Spot”
  • “The Last Stand of Dr. Ivo Robotnik”
  • “Genesis Does”
  • “We Ride”
Aug 21, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Cliff B and DJ Stuck Down a Mineshaft with a Broken Leg, aka 2d6. In the interview, we talked about RPGs, alternate track titles, their Kickstarter for the new album (I did actually upgrade to the Kano tier), secret nerd missions, and the pains of being a Silent Hill fan.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Hyuk Hyuk Hyuk Hyuk Hyuk Hyuk Hyuk”
  • “Tonawanda Powertrain (feat. Worm Quartet)”
  • “Yolo Toblerone”
Aug 14, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to The Doubleclicks. In the interview, we talked about cats, games, extinctions, and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

It’s definitely shorter than usual, but that’s mainly because I feel like I did a terrible job of asking follow up questions. I started to get nervous part way through the interview and just focused too much on what I was going to say next.

Oh, and Angela did send me an answer about the fictional cats: “Salem! From Sabrina! Of course!”

Songs played in the show:

  • Cats at Parties
  • Tabletop
  • Dimetrodon
  • President Snakes (Part 1)
Aug 7, 2015

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Mr. Negative. If it sounds a bit weird, it’s because I actually went to Richie’s apartment to conduct the interview. He’s a former student of mine from over ten years ago, and he actually lives not too far from me. In the interview, we talked about working as an indie musician, EDM culture, obsessive geekiness, Joe Walsh, and superhero movies.

Warning: spoilers for Avengers: Age of Ultron and Guardians of the Galaxy from about 34:50 (just after the fourth song excerpt) to about 38:26.

Songs played in the show:

  • Jasper
  • Repentance
  • James Dean
  • Voyage
