In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Greg and Steve from Lipstick. Although Lipstick II came out back in January, we hadn’t yet talked about it for the podcast. It’s a much geekier album than their debut, something which might have been polarizing out in the larger music community (as we talked about in the episode), but I suspect won’t be here!

Songs played in the show:

  • “Fake Nerd Girl”
  • “Cha La Head Cha La”
  • “Lipstick Encourages You to Have Fun at Our Shows but Not at the Expense of Other Concert Goers”

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Baba Brinkman. His latest release is The Rap Guide to Consciousness. Like all of his rap guides, it’s highly informative while also being entertaining. Check them out and learn something (unless you’re a p-zombie, of course)!

Songs played in the show:

  • “Good Bayesian (feat. MC Lars and Mega Ran)”
  • “Ready for Implants”
  • “Zombie”

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Mike Bryant of Kraken Not Stirred. His latest release is the Robots vs. Monsters EP, but you should also check out his YouTube channel for “more of this sort of foolishness.”

Songs played in the show:

  • “Make Way for the Singularity”
  • “I’ve Been in this Fight Since I Was Six Years Old”
  • “Dragons Are Cool”

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I (finally!) talk to members of Sci-Fried. I have no idea why I’ve never had them on before; it seems pretty crazy when I think about it! But now they’re on to promote their newest release, Hyperspaced, which might possibly be my favorite of theirs to date. It’s a fun episode, and be sure to stick around after the official ending for some (slightly explicit) “bonus features.”

Songs played in the show:

  • “Winter Has Come”
  • “Autocorrect”
  • “Problems (ft. Mega Ran)”

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Jason Amelio (and Foe the Destroyer!) from the Velveteen Band. Their latest release is What’s on the Other Side?. The album itself is really great, but a large part of the appeal of the band is in their visuals and stage presence. The lead singers are puppets, Foe (voiced and controlled by Jason) and Fum the Puppet (voiced by Captain Dan Flores and brought to life by Claire Flores), and their lead guitarist / trumpeter is Baron von Velveteen, an anthropomorphic rabbit (whose “real” identity remains a mystery). Yup, it’s pretty crazy and fun!

Songs played in the show:

  • “Holiday”
  • “Día de los Muertos”
  • “The Whovian People”

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Bryan Baker. I discovered his music because he emailed me as a fan of the podcast. After listening to his music, I knew he needed to be a guest. Check out his music, and you’ll quickly see why!

Songs played in the show:

  • “Nurse Jane”
  • “Zombie Love Song (If Anyone Eats My Brain)”
  • “Something Was Missing”

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Jace McLain from Nuclear Bubble Wrap and Holy Bongwater. NBW have released a few videos and some songs from their upcoming album which you can find on their YouTube channel and the FuMP respectively. Holy Bongwater keeps releasing new parodies, including their election-themed EP, Mock the Vote! 2016.

Songs played in the show:

  • “A Rowling in Time”
  • “Natural Woman”
  • “Donald Trump’s Wall”

Sep 29, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Austin Ash from Smashy Claw. Their most recent release is Demons in the Undertow, but we also talked about their previous album, Insane Is Repeating. Be sure to check out both of them!

Songs played in the show:

  • “Goldfish”
  • “Waterpark Inside Me”
  • “Skeevy Dude at the Motel Pool”

Sep 22, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Mikal kHill. His latest release is a four song EP, Bring Back My Ghost. It’s quite the diverse collection of songs, including an unexpected musical direction (at least for a solo kHill release) on the final track.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Martyr”
  • “Bring Back My Ghost”
  • “It’s Gonna Be F***ed Up Tomorrow”

Sep 15, 2017

I’m back! After a six month hiatus, I’ve decided to return to the podcast. I’m actually kinda surprised about that, being an introvert, but I realized that despite the editing and stuff it’s actually going to take less of my time to do this than the column would. So here we are!

A couple of notes about some minor changes: I’ve decided to include two or three full songs in each episode rather than just excerpts. That will save me some time in editing, plus it’s probably a better way to promote the music anyway. Second, I’ve also decided to change up the show notes introduction. I’m just going to write a bit about the artist’s most recent release(s) instead of trying to break down what we talked about. You’d be surprised by how much time and effort that takes to do. And finally, I decided to continue the numbering of the episodes rather than restart. I’m not really changing anything too major, so I felt like it just made sense.

In this episode, I talk again to Marc with a C. His latest release is the 10” EP (yes, you should definitely be getting it on vinyl!), Half Serious, Half Kidding, as well as an upcoming vinyl version of his interpretations of songs from the Shock Treatment soundtrack which you can pre-order now. He will also be releasing a new album in 2018 produced by Jordon Zadorozny of Blinker the Star. So keep an eye out for that (and expect him to return when that comes out!).

Songs played in the show:

  • “Selfies”
  • “First Time Collar”
  • “Clutch”

Mar 10, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk about the reasons behind the indefinite hiatus I’m planning after this episode. Could this be the final episode? It’s possible, actually, but listen to find out more!

Mar 3, 2017

It’s the last episode before the hiatus with an actual guest! Next week I’ll be explaining a bit about the reasons behind the hiatus for anyone who is interested.

Meanwhile, though, in this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Insane Ian. In the interview, we talked about how bad my early episodes were, the prolific output of Insane Ian since he last appeared, the 10th anniversary of the FuMP, rewatching stuff from our childhoods, MarsCon (which, I just realized, is going on the weekend this comes out – oops! I forgot to promote it! Uh, if you happen to be in the Minneapolis area, maybe you can still go?), reserving judgment on upcoming movies and shows, and comic books.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Believe It or Not”
  • “Die Hard Christmas”
  • “Kylo”
  • “Spider-Ham”

Feb 24, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Twill Distilled. In the interview, we talked about the origins of Twill’s stage name, Carrie Fisher’s death, breaking up, Wreck the System, collaborations, and Zelda.

Songs played in the show:

  • “F*** That Guy”
  • “Hive Mind”
  • “Next”
  • “Screamer”

Feb 17, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to B-Type. In the interview, we talked about the various Misters B, frustration with the state of the world, local slang, Gravity Falls, and Rogue One (minor spoilers, but not necessarily worth a full spoiler alert).

Songs played in the show:

  • “We Want Brains”
  • “Vigilante”
  • “Cannot Abide”
  • “Boo! I’m a Ghost”

Feb 10, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Shane Hall. In the interview, we talked about a whole bunch of things. I certainly learned a lot, which I’ll admit is something I’m sure I’m going to miss. Just give it a listen; Shane’s a really interesting guy!

Songs played in the show:

  • “Warp Theory 101”
  • “Avalanche”
  • “On Some Faraway Beach”
  • “Mother” – The TickleBomb Orchestra

Feb 3, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Yugen. In the interview, we talked about nerd music, hip-hop (“rap is crap!”), Star Wars, and Doctor Who.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Gangsta Unicorn (ft. Hi-Waters)”
  • “Star Wars Track”

Jan 27, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Trevakatha1ne. It’s actually a pretty short episode because he was on more as a fan than as an artist, although he’s working on some music. I decided not to include any music since nothing is complete at the moment, but you can check out a couple of things on his Soundcloud.

Jan 20, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Robin from Bedford Level Experiment. In the interview, we talked about writing solo albums, politics and religion, Star Wars (warning: Rogue One spoilers!), Paul Shaffer, finding an audience, Arthur C. Clarke, and emulators (especially C64).

Also, I have not actually had Wordburglar on the show despite the fact that I seemed to think that I had in the episode.... I have no idea why I thought I had; maybe it was a fever dream that I had one time? Yeah, I bet that’s it…

Songs played in the show:

  • “Robin’s or Tim’s”
  • “Surrender”
  • “Place Without a Computer”
  • “School Evacuation”

Jan 13, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Bluestreak. In the interview, we talked about a whole ton of things, especially his currently running GoFundMe campaign. It was simulcast, so to speak, live on Beyond the Horizon Radio, though I’ve done some editing to make it fit the format of the podcast.

And if you can spare anything to help out Bluestreak and BtHR, be sure to check out their GoFundMe. For just $25 you can get some cool exclusive music from a variety of nerdcore artists.

Jan 6, 2017

In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Shael Riley. In the interview, we talked about video game music remixes, a future Kickstarter, being clever, not finishing stuff, String Theory (the game, not the theory of the universe), cover songs, and Payday 2.

Songs played in the show:

  • “Balloon Flight” (The Grammar Club)
  • “Last Good Day” (The Grammar Club)
  • “One Headlight” (Shael Riley)
  • “Publishing Rights” (Shael Riley and The Double Ice Backfire)
